Alexandra and John David's mini-wedding on storied Cumberland Island was magical. If there ever was such a thing as laid back grandeur, this place embodies it. Ali’s bridal style was elevated yet breezy and unexpected, just like the island itself. Her emerald LOEFFLER RANDALL Camellia bow heels were such a perfect punchy complement to her OSCAR DE LA RENTA statement gown.
Cumberland Island, a ferry ride away from any grocery store or paved road, is home to wild horses, gargantuan oak trees, isolated stretches of beach, and the charming GREYFIELD INN, an estate built by Carnegies 1900. Known best as the island where JFK Jr. married Carolyn Bessette, Ali always knew it as a sort of child’s paradise – a place she grew up visiting with friends who were residents.
Returning for her wedding, she envisioned “a celebration of pattern and nature” inspired by the surroundings and brought to life by her floral gown and her bridal party’s eclectic mix of LA DOUBLE J and AGUA BENDITA gowns along with punchy colorful florals by REVELATION DESIGN. For accessories, the bride turned to artist and island resident GOGO JEWELRY, whose pieces are inspired by real found materials around the island. GOGO created the groom and groom’s father’s cufflinks, and the bride herself used their sea urchin shirt studs as buttons on the sleeves of her gown.
Planned by VERO EVENTS, the couple were married in front of the ruins of the Carnegie Dungeness mansion with immediate family and a few wild horses watching, then retired to drinks on the porch at the inn followed by dinner and a little late-night party under the stars. Charleston wedding photographer ANNE RHETT was on hand to capture their special day.
