Timeless Southern Elegance at the Duke Mansion

Beautifully captured by SAMANTHA BROOKE PHOTOGRAPHY, Hunter and Nicholas’ wedding at Charlotte’s historic DUKE MANSION was a celebration of timelessness in every sense. With DETAILS WEDDING PLANNING overseeing the day and CUT AT AN ANGLE creating the elegant all-white florals, the couple deliberately stepped away from passing trends in favour of a wedding that felt traditional, formal and deeply personal.

For Hunter, the venue choice had been made long before there was a wedding to plan. Her grandfather lives just down the street from Duke Mansion, and she had admired the historic home since childhood. In fact, when she and Nicholas first toured it together, she jokingly informed him it was the only option, so he had better love it. Fortunately, seeing the mansion in person only confirmed what she had always imagined.

Hunter and Nicholas grew up in the same hometown, attended the same middle and high schools and shared the same circle of friends. Although they had always felt drawn towards one another, the timing never quite aligned until the end of college.

Years later, Nicholas proposed during Hunter’s family beach holiday. Thinking they were simply taking Christmas card photographs together, Hunter had no idea that her father and Nicholas had planned the surprise. In a particularly meaningful coincidence, Nicholas chose a spot directly in front of the house where Hunter’s late great-grandmother had once stayed during family holidays, with her father there to photograph the entire moment.

The wedding morning began with another private moment. Hunter and Nicholas woke early and exchanged personal vows before separating to get ready for the day ahead. Hunter spent a slow morning in the bridal suite surrounded by her closest friends. “It felt like my friends and I were all getting ready in my room again like we had done growing up,” she remembers. Rather than feeling nervous, she carried a wonderful sense of calm throughout the day.

Her bridal look reflected the same understated elegance as the celebration. Hunter chose the Malea gown by LOUVIENNE from LOVELY BRIDE, pairing its classic silhouette with a dramatic train and cathedral-length veil. Nicholas wore a custom tuxedo from MYERS PARK TAILORS, while his groomsmen kept things traditional in classic black Vera Wang tuxedos.

Hunter wanted the wedding to feel as though it could have taken place before the era of social media trends, and that philosophy guided every design decision.

The stationery was kept beautifully simple, using off-white paper with moss green script and traditional wording inviting guests on behalf of Hunter’s parents. Moss green ceremony programs introduced a stronger touch of colour against the otherwise all-white ceremony setting.

Florals by CUT AT AN ANGLE followed a similarly restrained approach. White pedestal arrangements framed the ceremony, while small compotes kept the reception tables elegant and uncluttered. Each bridesmaid carried a bouquet composed of a single variety of white flower, while Hunter’s own bouquet brought all of those varieties together, a subtle and meaningful representation of the women standing beside her.

Guests were welcomed with champagne before taking their seats on Duke Mansion’s McGuire Lawn. There were no designated bride and groom sides, creating a relaxed sense of togetherness despite the formality of the setting.

A string trio accompanied the ceremony, including a particularly meaningful rendition of “For Good” from Wicked as the wedding party entered. With siblings and lifelong friends making up much of the group, its message about the people who shape our lives felt especially fitting. The ceremony itself was intentionally short, simple and traditional, allowing the beauty of the mansion and surrounding gardens to provide the backdrop.

Rather than rushing into the reception, Hunter and Nicholas planned an extended cocktail hour on the patio, giving them time to have a drink and properly connect with their guests.

STRADLEY DAVIDSON’S Hampton Parrot linens brought pattern to the cocktail tables, softened with petite arrangements of white flowers. A live jazz trio played as guests enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres and charcuterie alongside the couple’s signature cocktails, a classic margarita for Nicholas and blueberry cosmopolitan for Hunter. It was a slightly more relaxed interlude before the evening moved into the formal tented reception.

Inside, ivory linens, moss green napkins and silver flatware created an understated tablescape beneath oversized lanterns suspended from the tent ceiling. Small floral compotes and candlelight completed the setting without overwhelming it, while an escort display directed guests to their tables before allowing them to choose their own seats.

Among the many carefully considered details was one that carried generations of family history. When Hunter and Nicholas cut their wedding cake, they used the same knife Hunter’s grandmother had used to cut hers on her own wedding day. A live band kept the dance floor full throughout the evening, while a black-and-white photo booth gave guests their own beautifully simple keepsakes from the celebration.

For Hunter and Nicholas, perhaps the most surreal part was simply looking around and seeing people from every stage of their lives gathered together in one place. It was a fitting sentiment for two people whose own history stretches back to childhood, and for a wedding designed not around what was currently fashionable, but around the people, traditions and details they hope will remain meaningful for decades to come.

Two days later, the newlyweds departed for Italy, spending a week between Rome, Sorrento and Naples, balancing sightseeing with slower days beside the water.
