Sunset Hues Meet Black Tie Elegance in Portugal

For Leslie and Khephren, Portugal had long been one of their favourite places, making it the natural choice for a destination wedding that would bring together family and friends from New York and beyond. Captured with warmth and artistry by MOMENTO CATIVO, their celebration at PENHA LONGA RESORT was beautifully planned by LUCYANA SPOSITO, who transformed the resort’s historic monastery into the perfect setting for an elegant black tie celebration that never took itself too seriously. Overflowing florals by DECORELLE, vibrant sunset-inspired colours and thoughtful personal details created a day that felt sophisticated, welcoming and unmistakably them.

Their story began during the pandemic when they both joined the same company while working remotely. Although they often joke that they had an office romance without ever stepping foot inside an office, countless Zoom meetings laid the foundation for their relationship. Once restrictions eased, meeting in person only confirmed what they already suspected. They were meant to be together.

After three and a half years together, Khephren proposed on the rooftop of their New York apartment building after creating a trail of flowers leading Leslie upstairs. Surrounded by candles and blooms, she barely remembers the words he said, only the overwhelming joy of the moment. Afterwards, they celebrated with friends waiting at their favourite neighbourhood bar.

Finding a venue that felt authentic was one of the couple’s biggest priorities. They wanted somewhere guests could stay together while also offering an experience that couldn’t be recreated back home. When Lucyana introduced them to PENHA LONGA’S historic monastery, they immediately knew they had found it.

The centuries-old architecture provided a striking backdrop while allowing every part of the celebration to unfold seamlessly in one location, from the ceremony through to the late-night dancing.

Although the dress code was black tie, Leslie wanted the overall aesthetic to feel light, colourful and full of personality. Their stationery introduced a cheerful palette of pinks, peaches, oranges and yellows that echoed throughout the day, while handwritten letters to every guest became one of the celebration’s most memorable details.

Each guest discovered a personal note waiting at their place setting, prompting laughter, tears and heartfelt conversations throughout cocktail hour. It was a labour of love that perfectly reflected how much their guests meant to them.

Leslie’s vision for the florals was beautifully simple. She shared her colour palette with DECORELLE before stepping back and allowing their creativity to lead the design.

The result exceeded every expectation. Bridesmaids each carried bouquets featuring different flowers, creating subtle individuality, while the ceremony installation transformed the historic setting into an abundant garden bursting with colour. The floral design struck the perfect balance between elegance and whimsy, complementing rather than competing with the monastery’s timeless architecture.

Leslie found her HOUSE OF RENHUE gown during her very first bridal appointment. Drawn to its sculptural silhouette, structured bodice and elegant basque waist, she described wanting to look “like a statue in a garden”, a vision that suited the venue beautifully. Khephren complemented her in a classic Bonobos tuxedo, while the bridesmaids embraced individual styles within a palette of pink, peach and yellow dresses.

Later in the evening, both changed outfits for the reception, with Leslie sparkling in a blue sequin dress while Khephren swapped to a crisp white tuxedo jacket, setting the tone for the party ahead.

One of the most meaningful moments of the day came before the ceremony during their first look. After a morning spent apart, simply seeing one another brought immediate comfort. Their first words to each other, “I missed you,” perfectly captured the closeness of their relationship.

The ceremony itself was officiated by one of their closest friends, making every moment feel deeply personal. Leslie walked down the aisle with both of her parents to a string rendition of Birds of a Feather, before exchanging heartfelt vows that left scarcely a dry eye among their guests. It was emotional, sincere and filled with moments of gentle laughter that reflected exactly who they are as a couple.

As the evening unfolded, cocktail hour gave the newlyweds the opportunity to spend meaningful time with their guests before everyone gathered for dinner and dancing. From espresso martinis at midnight to a packed dance floor that lasted until three in the morning, the celebration never lost momentum.
