Cultural tradtions & meaningful details in this Elegant celebration

On the final day of Asha & Ricardo’s multi-day celebration, an elegant multicultural ceremony led to a tented reception featuring Michelin-starred cuisine, Indian delicacies, dancing, and unforgettable moments under the stars.

After the vision of Part One of Asha and Ricardo’s wedding and then the color and vibrancy of the Haldi and Sangeet ceremonies, this wedding ceremony on the final day of their multi-day celebration was an elegant tribute to their multicultural backgrounds, set against the stunning backdrop of TORRE DE PALMA, Portugal. Once again MOMENTO CATIVO captured the festivities with exquisite beauty. Working with WEDDINGS AND SPECIAL EVENTS BY PASSAGE TO INDIA, their special day seamlessly wove together cultural traditions and meaningful details across a series of unique events. For the reception, they chose an enchanting tented celebration beneath the night sky, bringing loved ones together for an evening filled with joy, dancing, and shared memories. The couple collaborated with Torre de Palma’s Michelin-starred chef, Miguel Laffamas, to create a dinner that highlighted the seasonal flavors of Alentejo. Honoring their Indian roots, they enlisted PASSAGE TO INDIA, Portugal’s top Indian wedding caterer, to present a delightful array of northern and southern Indian dishes.

THE PROPOSAL

In early April 2022, Ricardo’s family was visiting from Portugal.  At that time the couple lived separately but close by to one another in NYC.  They spent the day walking from Central Park to the southernmost tip of NYC and by the end of the day, Asha was exhausted.  She retreated home for a nap and later that evening, Ricardo would ask her to dinner at a Michelin star restaurant.  She, being exhausted, suggested they skip the fancy restaurant and go around the corner to a local Italian restaurant they had been meaning to try.  At the restaurant Ricardo tried to order the fanciest bottle of wine and an elaborate menu, but Asha suggested they keep it simple and easy.  After dinner, Ricardo walked Asha back home and the couple shared one of their favorite bottles of wine from a vineyard in Tuscany they had visited earlier that year.  As they sat on the couch, they asked each other questions about life, as they often did.  Ricardo asked, “How would you feel about spending the rest of your life with me?” To which Asha replied, “You should have a ring if you want to ask me that question,” which Ricardo promptly pulled out a beautiful ring, ready for her quibble.  He left her speechless!

indian wedding traditions

Indian weddings are a vibrant celebration of love, family, and cultural heritage, rich in traditions that span centuries. Rooted in deep symbolism and religious significance, these joyous events often last several days, featuring ceremonies, rituals, and festivities that honor the union of two families.

A hallmark of Indian weddings is their diversity, influenced by the region, religion, and cultural background of the couple. For instance, Hindu weddings often include the Saptapadi, where the couple takes seven vows around a sacred fire, symbolizing their commitment to each other. Sikh weddings feature the Anand Karaj, where the couple circles the Guru Granth Sahib four times, reflecting their spiritual union. In Muslim weddings, the Nikah is central, marked by the signing of the marriage contract and prayers.

Pre-wedding events, such as the Mehndi and Sangeet, are colorful and music-filled celebrations. The Mehndi ceremony involves intricate henna designs applied to the bride’s hands and feet, signifying beauty and good luck. The Sangeet is a lively evening of song and dance, where both families come together to celebrate.

FASHION & FOOD

Bridal attire often includes ornate saris or lehengas adorned with intricate embroidery and jewelry, symbolizing prosperity and tradition. The groom traditionally wears a sherwani or kurta with a turban, often paired with a ceremonial sword.

Food plays a central role in Indian weddings, with lavish feasts offering an array of regional delicacies. Traditional sweets like ladoos and gulab jamun symbolize sweetness and prosperity for the couple’s journey ahead.

Indian weddings are more than just a union of two individuals; they are a fusion of rituals, emotions, and cultural significance. They celebrate love, community, and the enduring richness of Indian traditions, creating unforgettable memories for all involved.

THE STATIONERY

The couple chose Anita Dongre’s elegant stationery designs on Paperless Post for their save-the-date and invitations, blending digital convenience with exquisite style. To provide guests with a seamless planning experience, they created a personalized wedding website through THE KNOT, taking advantage of its customization options. The wedding weekend guide was a collaborative labor of love, crafted by the bride’s sister and brother-in-law, who drew inspiration from traditional Pichwai art for a meaningful touch. From ceremony programs to bar menus, the wedding stationery was thoughtfully curated and designed by IN LOVE STUDIO, ensuring every detail aligned with the couple’s vision.

A blend of timeless traditions and modern elegance, Asha and Ricardo’s wedding in the heart of Alentejo brought together the rich cultures of Portugal and India, celebrating love with unmatched class and glamour.
