I’m delighted to be sharing with you this short interview with Idaho Wedding Photographer BRIE THOMASON today. Specialising in capturing carefully styled moments and details, Brie is drawn to storytelling telling us, “I love weddings the most because I feel like when you look at your completed wedding album you are reading your story start to finish. I love capturing laughs and cries and every silly face in between.” Forming close bonds with her clients is just one of the things Brie loves the most about being in this industry. Read on to learn more about Brie.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER? In the lingering sun of a hot August night I pledged my life to my best friend. My wedding day was like a dream, and much like a dream it flew by all too fast. One moment I was getting my hair and makeup done, and the next moment we were alone in our hotel room with food truck macaroni and cheese reminiscing about the day. Every detail was important to me from the flowers, to the cake, and most importantly all the people that were there to support and cheer us on as we become one under God. The problem with all those details is that they were all temporary. The flowers wilted, the cake was eaten, I removed all 700 bobby pins, and all our guests went home. So how could I make this fairytale continue on for the rest of my life? Photographs. This, my friends, is why I do what I do.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR PATH TO GET THERE: I began photographing weddings three years ago. A friend trusted in my skills and hired me to photograph my first wedding. It only took one wedding to get hooked on capturing weddings. I started as a digital photographer and built up a strong portfolio. After two years I started to incorporate film, and over the last year I have moved to shooting 80/20 being film 80% of the time and digital only 20%.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? I am primarily located in Idaho, which means that gorgeous mountain views are in abundance! It is important to me to stay authentic to our woodsy aesthetic, but also incorporate fine art elements. I tend to be a mixture of fine art and photo – journalism. Details are very important to me, so styling and capturing those details is something that I find myself drawn to. Emotion is the other thing that draws me to photography- which is where the photo-journalism style comes in. I love to capture intimacy and real moments as they happen. Raw emotions tell a beautiful story that should be told and remembered forever. I want each image to stand out as its own timeless piece, but also come together to create a story.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WEDDINGS? Details and emotion seem to be what draws me most to weddings. My clients have spent months- if not years- dreaming of and working on all the small details that come together to make their wedding a beautiful event. The details may be temporary, but my images will carry on the day for years to come. Emotions are the other thing that makes weddings as gift to me as a photographer. I find myself crying during the sharing of the vows and every father-daughter dance. I can’t help but feel so much love for these clients that I have grown to adore over our time planning together.

SHARE YOUR FAVOURITE IMAGE WITH US AND TELL US WHY: I feel like this image below captures everything that I hope for as a photographer. It is timeless, intimate, and stands out when seen alone. It also tells a story. Annalise is quiet, soft spoken, and sweet- all of which is portrayed in this one image.

CAN YOU RECALL YOUR FAVOURITE WEDDING EXPERIENCE? At the end of one of my favourite weddings last summer the father of the bride walked up to me and grabbed into the biggest bear hug. We hadn’t shared many words throughout the day, but his hug said everything. He hugged me and said, “Thank you for everything you did today. You were a gift to us.” That is a moment I will never forget.

ASIDE FROM FAMILY & FRIENDS, THREE THINGS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: First and foremost, I can’t live without my faith. On the good days I praise His blessings and on the hard days I remember His lessons and trust in his guidance. Faith carries me through every day of my life. Second, I can’t live without my two miniature Australian shepherds Chloe and Daisy. Third, coffee; not a day goes by that I don’t enjoy a cup of coffee! My favourite treat is a hot double shot breve latte.

WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOU ON A SUNDAY MORNING? If I am in town I love to attend a church service on Sunday mornings. If I am not in town, you will find me cuddled in bed with my husband procrastinating starting the day. Some weekends we try to get away to our cabin in the woods. Every season there is some beauty to draw us there, but winter mornings seem to be my favourite. I love cuddling in front of the fireplace sipping my coffee.

HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR IDEAL DAY OFF? Nothing makes me more happy than traveling! My husband and I are a team, running two businesses, which means we are very busy! When we travel, we get to take a break from the daily hustle and see the world. Our favourite place we have traveled so far was St. Maarten in the Caribbean. My favourite thing to do is photograph our travels with my 35mm film camera. My office is covered with printed images from our travels!
