Catherine Band

Boston Photographer

I'm Catherine Band, a wedding photographer based in Boston MA, with a love for all things weddings, architecture and food. Boston is the perfect place to be a wedding photographer: there are distinct and beautiful seasons, a rich local history with incredible architecture, and wonderful clients that appreciate the art of film photography. Many of my favourite local weddings venues are historic estates and Boston hotels. It's incredible to incorporate that history and architecture into my work. I use film photography as much as possible on wedding days when I have natural light available. I love how my film photographs look like paintings. Wedding photography can be an art, and film forces me to slow down and be artistic. I live in Salem MA with my boyfriend, who second shoots and film rolls for me, and my adorable Dalmatian, Penny. When I'm not photography weddings, we love traveling, dining out, cooking, and working out. We don't sit still much, but when we do, we're watching Parks & Recreation on Netflix.

Interview

IF I HAVE A FREE SUNDAY I WOULD SPEND IT… exploring a new place. I love seeing new towns, trying the local coffee shop, going for a walk and sampling a few different restaurants. I moved to Boston eight years ago, and have been very inspired by the New England architecture whenever I travel. I’m also a foodie, so dining out is a big part of how I explore a place.

MY MOST MEMORABLE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE WAS… my husband and I went to Marrakech in 2018. I’ve traveled to a lot of European countries, so Marrakech was a big culture shock. We loved the food, textiles and architecture in Morocco.

THE COUNTRY I MOST WANT TO VISIT IS… So many in South America - Peru, Argentina, Chile, Columbia.

WHAT I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY JOB IS… being a wedding photography is so gratifying. The ability to capture moments that will become family heirlooms is so special. I treasure the old photos I have of my family and feel so special I get to create that for someone else.

IF I DIDN’T DO THIS FOR A JOB I WOULD BE/DO… I would love to be a chef! The cooking process is so de-stressing. I could spend hours in the kitchen and never lose interest. One of my favorite things to do is host big dinner parties for my friends.

IF I COULD GIVE NEWLY ENGAGED COUPLES ONE PIECE OF ADVICE IT WOULD BE… to stop trying to please other people or what society says you have to do. Make your wedding day an emotional and beautiful reflection of your own relationship. I feel like couples try to fit into a mold of the “perfect” wedding day.

I LOVE WHERE I LIVE BECAUSE… I’ve visited most of the US and Boston is the best for its rich history, old architecture, seafood, and the hardworking, salt-of-the-earth people. I also love the distinct seasons. The summer and fall here are unbeatable, and I love the winter for skiing and the snow!

IF I COULD LIVE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD IT WOULD BE… Boston is hard to beat but maybe France. I love the old world architecture and the passion for food.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE IS? I love all of the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter movies!

MOST MEMORABLE MEAL I’VE EVER EATEN WAS… My boyfriend and I visited France a couple years ago and had lunch in a little town called Gassin in the Provence region, overlooking these valleys of vineyards. I ate scallops in a buerre-blanc and a spritz and he had squid ink risotto. It was crazy good.

THE PETS I OWN ARE… My Dalmatian, Penny, is my life! She is such a princess. She sleeps until noon, hates going for walks, and is such a snuggler. I got her when she was a puppy and I was in college, so we’ve spent 8 sweet years together.
