An Elegant English Country Wedding at RiverOaks Charleston

Blending faith, family, and heritage, this Charleston wedding unfolded with all the grace of an English countryside celebration. From heartfelt vows to heirloom details and riverside dining, it was a day layered with meaning, artistry, and timeless romance.

Captured beautifully by DAVY WHITENER, Jake and MerriCameron’s Charleston wedding was more than an elegant affair — it was a reflection of their shared faith, family legacy, and enduring love. With planning and design by the bride’s mother Marianne of RIVEROAKS CHARLESTON and LAUREN HEUBER, alongside the artistry of FESTOON and PAPER BIRCH DESIGNS, every detail spoke to the couple’s values: faith, heritage, home, and the covenant of marriage. For MerriCameron, marrying at her family’s cherished RIVEROAKS property, surrounded by generations of tradition, made the day profoundly personal and steeped in meaning. And for myself this is a very special wedding for me to feature as I spent a very memorable week at RIVEROAKS several years ago enjoying the unrivaled hospitality of the Marianne and MerriCameron alongside the entire family.

A Love Story on the Ravenel Bridge

The couple’s love story began in Charleston, where a chance online connection revealed they both attended the same church. With Jesus at the heart of their relationship, it was a natural foundation for their love to grow. Their first date — walking the Ravenel Bridge — quickly became a defining memory. A sudden thunderstorm swept over them, but instead of retreating, they laughed, held hands, and found joy in the moment. When the rain cleared, Jake kissed MerriCameron for the first time atop the bridge, a bold gesture from his usually reserved nature.

Seven months later, Jake brought their story full circle, proposing at that very spot. With a three-stone ring featuring diamonds from both families, he asked her to marry him as their loved ones gathered in a spontaneous parade of balloons, bells, and flowers.

The English Country Vision

The wedding aesthetic reflected the couple’s love of heritage, timeless design, and the warmth of home. Inspired by both the family chapel and MerriCameron’s English-inspired childhood home, the celebration was elegant yet unpretentious. Wood, paper, fabric, leather, oil paintings, and transferware created layers of texture, while personal heirlooms and intentional storytelling ensured every detail was infused with meaning. More than décor, it was a living narrative of faith, family, and legacy woven together to honor the past while celebrating a new beginning.

The Art of Paper

Stationery by PAPER BIRCH DESIGNS became a cornerstone of the wedding design, bringing the aesthetic of the bride’s family home into the event itself. Botanical envelope liners, vintage stamps, and oak tree wax seals were paired with painted imagery by Jordan Mikal. Guests found themselves immersed in a gallery of artistry: hand-painted scripture cards on chapel pews, a program featuring the Citadel Chapel, escort cards illustrated with icons of the property — bees, grapes, chickens, mallard ducks, heirloom bells — and menus hand-illustrated with the riverside view where dinner would later be served. Each piece connected back to home, faith, and heritage, turning the paper goods into treasured keepsakes.

For MerriCameron, marrying at her family’s cherished property, surrounded by generations of tradition, made the day profoundly personal and steeped in meaning.

Getting Ready in Peace

The morning began in serenity, as the bridal party gathered at a friend’s riverside home. With a lovingly prepared brunch and a calm atmosphere, MerriCameron was surrounded by her closest women before returning to RiverOaks for portraits and the journey to the Citadel Chapel.

First Looks and Private Moments

The day unfolded with tender first looks: a tearful exchange with her father, who carried a handkerchief made by his grandmother eighty years ago; a heartfelt moment with her new stepson, whose excitement matched the groom’s; and finally, an intimate meeting with Jake in front of the family’s glasshouse by the pond. These quiet pauses throughout the day — from a vintage car ride to a private dinner for two — were intentional gifts of presence amidst the joyful whirlwind.

The Fashion

MerriCameron wore a LEA-ANN BELTER gown with voluminous off-the-shoulder sleeves, a floral organza skirt, and a sweeping cathedral-length veil carried by her page boy nephews. A blusher veil worn by her mother and a headpiece crafted by an artisan in Ukraine added layers of history and new beginnings. Bridesmaids chose romantic dresses in soft tones, while the groomsmen embodied a “gathered English aesthetic” with loden jackets, plaid ties, and cognac cords styled by GENTLEMEN’S CORNER. Jake’s look was refined yet personal, with chestnut pants and a custom plaid tie — a subtle nod to his style woven throughout the event.

Florals in Full Bloom

FESTOON designed arrangements that captured the lushness of an English garden. Soft pastels — creamy ivory, pale yellow, peach, blush, and pink — graced the chapel and bouquets, accented by feathers from a recent hunt for the groomsmen’s boutonnieres. At the riverside reception, autumn tones deepened the palette with dahlias, ranunculus, cosmos, persimmon branches, and brambles, creating tables that felt abundant and alive. Fruit, books, candles, and foraged elements echoed the way the bride’s family has always styled their own home gatherings.

A Ceremony at The Citadel Chapel

The ceremony held at SUMMERALL CHAPEL was deeply significant. Not only was it the alma mater of the father of the bride, but also the site of her parents’ vow renewal and her sister’s wedding. MerriCameron, escorted across the parade ground by her father to the sound of bagpipes, entered the chapel as nieces and nephews attended her, carrying her veil and scattering petals. The Christian service, led by their pastor, wove together hymns, scripture, and vows, including promises to Jake’s son, affirming their union as a new family.

An Arrival in Style

The newlyweds departed in a vintage car and were welcomed at RIVEROAKS with cocktails in the glasshouse. The father of the bride introduced the evening by ringing her grandfather’s farm bell, a motif carried throughout the celebration. Stories were shared by family members, reminding everyone of the legacy of home, faith, and hospitality that defined the day.

Cocktails, Dinner, and Stories by the River

Back at RIVEROAKS, guests were welcomed to the English Glasshouse for cocktails before progressing to the family’s riverside home for dinner. The atmosphere was layered with story and tradition, beginning with a grazing table of foods grown, harvested, or prepared by family members—smoked brisket, homemade jams, pickled okra, and honey from the father of the bride’s hives. Escort cards led guests to tables adorned with icons from the property, each detail reinforcing the sense of place and heritage.

Dinner tables beneath the oaks were draped in green plaid, as a nod to Jake’s personal style, while florals by FESTOON brought the English garden aesthetic to life. Garden roses, dahlias, ranunculus, persimmon branches, and foraged vines overflowed in arrangements that mirrored the family’s own gardens. As the sun set over the river, the atmosphere was one of intimacy and joy. Candlelight and café lights softened the riverside atmosphere, making the expansive celebration feel like an intimate meal at home.

Afterwards as the guests were leaving, the couple secretly returned to a neighbor’s dock and slowly made their way unseen to their getaway car. The moments viewing their wedding scene from afar was the perfect visual closure for a day they will never forget.

Legacy and Celebration

The evening wove together meaningful traditions: a cake by the same bakery who made her parents’ wedding cake, topped with gum paste flowers to be saved as a keepsake; homemade limoncello from family lemons; and heartfelt toasts by siblings. Dancing followed in a tent styled as an English living room, with sofas, oil paintings, lamps, and warm autumn hues. Music by Charleston’s QUIANA PARLER kept the floor alive as stories and laughter echoed beneath the stars.

A Farewell with Bells and Fireworks

In keeping with tradition, bells rang once more as the couple departed by boat, captained by the bride’s youngest brother, with surprise fireworks bursting overhead. Guests lingered in the glow, watching as the couple quietly returned later to glimpse their wedding scene from afar — a private, poignant moment of closure.

Happily Ever After

The celebration concluded with a Charleston mini-moon, before a winter honeymoon in Riviera Maya, Mexico. From start to finish, Jake and MerriCameron’s wedding was not only a beautiful event, but a covenant celebration — one that honored their faith, their families, and the generations before and after them. At RIVEROAKS, amidst roses, rivers, and English countryside charm, they began their marriage in the most meaningful way possible.
