This creative process shoot by KYLIE MILLS highlights the work of Sydney Wedding Florist Cara Fitch of TRILLE FLORAL and we’re lucky to have her on the blog today telling a little of her story and how she got to where she is now. Doesn’t this look like the most inspiring place to spend you days in?
“So often as artists we only get the opportunity to show the end results. It’s not a secret that our Instagram accounts are carefully curated to show our best work. This usually means the finished product. When Kylie approached me about photographing the creative process I was really excited because there are many stages to what I do. The majority of my time is spent planning, emailing, cleaning and prepping flowers. Then, if I have time to snap a quick photo of a finished arrangement or bouquet, that’s generally what I end up sharing.
I’m not really sure where my love of flowers and foliage came from. I grew up with 3 brothers and spent most of my time building forts and wrestling with them. I do recall being horrified when my Dad told me of his plans to run over all the dandelions in our backyard with his lawn mower. I ran outside sobbing trying to “save” them. Maybe that’s where it all began.
As long as I can remember I’ve been drawn to beauty. And, for just as long, I’ve wanted to be a florist. Over the years I kept going down forced paths of what I thought I should be doing, all the while knowing these paths weren’t right for me. I was meant to work with my hands, explore colour combinations and ultimately create beauty.
I was trained in flowers at my favourite floral studio in Toronto, Canada: Sweet Woodruff. My time there inspired me deeply and helped to shape my own designs. That experience affirmed that this was what I wanted to do. I haven’t looked back.
When my husband and I moved from Toronto to Sydney, Australia it was a complete whirlwind of trying to find my place in the industry. It took me awhile to adjust to the difference in seasons and product. I worked with some truly incredible designers in Sydney. In fact, I still do. It’s a community; we help each other out. I started TRILLE because after years of working alongside other people I was ready to go off on my own. I had design ideas that were bursting to come out and it was exciting to have creative control. Whether I’m doing a wedding, a photo-shoot, or a corporate event I give it my everything. It’s all worth it to me when I hand a bride her bouquet and see that she loves it, or when I know that something has come out just right.
In all the things I’ve invested myself in – dance, travel, study, I’ve always been drawn to beauty. I love the quote by Elsie De Wolfe that reads, “I’m going to make everything around me beautiful, that will be my life”. Like so many creatives, it’s not just about one specific art form for me. I strive to see, experience, and create beauty in all the areas of my life. In many ways, I do this best with flowers.”
