Photography is a huge part of who Louisiana wedding photographer LEXIE VACCARO is. When she's not shooting she's spending time with her family. She's described as an old soul, with a desire to travel, and an appreciation for books, antiques, and music. "Flowers are my love language, and if I wasn't a photographer, I would most definitely explore the floristry world. Film photography is my heart and passion, and something I incorporate in all of my work. I always have some sort of film camera with me documenting every day life." Today we're learning more about her journey.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A PHOTOGRAPHER? I was originally drawn to landscape photography. My husband and I were planning a trip to Arizona and I really wanted to make sure I documented it well and captured all of the sights we were visiting. I researched cameras and started down the rabbit hole of landscape photographers and photography which eventually led me to film photography and then wedding photography. I bought my first camera for traveling purposes and was hooked.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR PATH TO GET THERE: After having a camera just for personal use for a while, I ended up discovering that I enjoyed taking photographs of people and couples. Something lit inside me capturing the connection of two people and even more so on film. I had no idea how to get into the wedding photography world, but I knew I wanted in. My first gig was carrying equipment around for a well known photographer in New Orleans in 2018, who is now my really good friend. I kept doing that and started second shooting a ton and eventually, I shot my first solo wedding in 2019. I haven’t looked back since. When you know, you know.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? I would describe my style as a fine-art documentary style. It’s organic, captivating, and nostalgic. Like flipping through your grandparent’s old photo albums.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WEDDINGS? It’s really heartwarming being invited in to document a couple’s wedding day. The entire day from start to finish is an experience, and we, as photographers, become a part of the day, if you really think about it. You usually start the day only knowing a tad bit about the couple you're photographing, and leave learning so much about their life by spending time around the people they love the most. I love stepping back and just absorbing the moments with everyone with a camera in my hand. Watching interactions unfold and learning relationship dynamics. Weddings are such joyous days. I leave feeling so full of love.
SHARE YOUR FAVOURITE IMAGE WITH US AND TELL US WHY: My favourite image is one from the first time I shot film. It was in Utah at a photography workshop. I delayed getting the film developed for a while, but when I did, my jaw dropped. It began the true spark of it all.
CAN YOU RECALL YOUR FAVOURITE WEDDING EXPERIENCE? I had a bride who had recently lost a family member, so she and her few close family members did a butterfly release with tons of monarchs. It was so beautiful.
ASIDE FROM FAMILY & FRIENDS, THREE THINGS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? Film photography, flowers, and music.
WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOU ON A SUNDAY MORNING? Sipping coffee with my family and getting ready for church.
HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR IDEAL DAY OFF? With my husband and daughter, grabbing some delicious lunch in St. Francisville, then maybe antique shopping and sightseeing in the gardens nearby in St. Francisville.
Louisiana wedding photographer LEXIE VACCARO is a valued member of our Vendor Collective. She describes her work as a mix between fine-art and documentary style imagery. "I am an intentional, artful observer – anticipating moments as they are about to unfold in front of me, and capturing all the beauty, emotion, and details of your wedding celebration. I strongly believe you deserve to be fully present on your wedding day, so because of this, I like to only step in with direction as needed. Every couple, every wedding, and every love story are different. You should have photographs that reflect that and be unique to you". You can see more of her portfolio here.
